UAE Escalates Anti-Mosquito Measures in Response to Post-Flooding Infestation

The United Arab Emirates is stepping up efforts to tackle a surge in mosquito populations, a direct aftermath of recent flooding events that have left standing water across various regions, creating ideal breeding grounds for these pests.

The increase in mosquito activity has been particularly noted in Abu Dhabi and other emirate hotspots where water accumulates. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has announced the launch of the third phase of its rigorous anti-mosquito campaign, which includes measures like thermal fogging to eliminate mosquitoes and their larvae, and the removal of floodwaters to destroy potential breeding sites.

This initiative, first launched in February 2022, is set to continue through May 2025, with each emirate collaborating closely with the ministry to address and mitigate the mosquito problem effectively.

Further enhancing public awareness, the Dubai Municipality recently posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, sharing practical tips for individuals to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

How you can prevent mosquito bites

  • Eliminate stagnant water in fountains, pools, old tyres, barrels and empty containers.
  • Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing with long sleeves and trousers.
  • Use insect repellents containing deet or picaridin on exposed skin and re-apply as instructed.
  • Install proper window and door screens and ensure they are intact to keep mosquitos out.

The urgency of these measures is underscored by the potential health risks posed by mosquitoes, including the transmission of serious diseases such as Dengue Fever, malaria, and Zika virus. As the UAE tackles these challenges, residents are urged to take individual precautions to ensure their safety and contribute to nationwide efforts to control the mosquito population.
