Oman Set to Become a Green Energy Leader with Innovative Hydrogen and Ammonia Project

Oman is poised to become a major force in the global green energy market through a new project focused on producing green hydrogen and ammonia. This initiative is the result of a partnership between Actis, a leader in sustainable infrastructure, and Fortescue, known for its innovations in green energy and technology.

This collaboration has been granted exclusive rights to develop this pioneering project in Oman, following their successful bid in the second round of the country's green hydrogen tender process. The project is currently in the feasibility stage and plans to build approximately 4.5GW of wind and solar energy facilities. These installations will power electrolysers capable of producing up to 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

The produced hydrogen will not only serve local needs but also be converted into green ammonia for export via the port of Salalah. This strategic move was highlighted during a signing ceremony in Muscat, attended by H.E. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Oman’s Minister of Energy and Minerals and the Chairman of Hydrom, the entity spearheading Oman’s green hydrogen strategy.

H.E. Al Aufi emphasized Oman’s strategic geographical location, which bridges Europe and Asia, making it an ideal hub for green hydrogen production due to its high-tier infrastructure and supportive government policies.

Actis and Fortescue underscored the importance of the green hydrogen sector in transitioning away from fossil fuels and decarbonizing sectors that are difficult to convert to sustainable practices. They aim to position Oman as a significant player in the global markets for green hydrogen and ammonia.

Moataz Kandil, MENA President at Fortescue, reiterated the shared commitment of Actis and Fortescue to global decarbonization and the development of a new green energy industry. He highlighted the project as an attractive investment opportunity, supported by robust demand, a stable regulatory framework, and Oman’s strategic positioning. Significant financial backing from major financial institutions is already in place to support the project’s development.
