Dubai is set to transform air travel with the upcoming launch of its groundbreaking Travel Without Borders initiative, which will allow passengers to pass through airports without showing any documents. The innovative project will use advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and facial recognition technology to streamline the entire airport experience, eliminating the need for passport control counters, gates, or immigration officers, a senior official from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) confirmed.
Lieutenant Colonel Khaled bin Madia Al Falasi, Deputy Assistant Director for Smart Services at GDRFA Dubai, revealed the ambitious plan, stating that the AI-powered system will enable travellers to move seamlessly through Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) without having to stop for any document checks. "Travellers will simply walk through without stopping or showing any documents," he explained.
Seamless Travel Experience with AI Facial Recognition
The Travel Without Borders system will employ biometric facial recognition cameras to identify travellers while they are on the move. The system will automatically confirm a traveller’s identity by matching their biometric data as they walk through the airport. This will officially register their arrival or departure at passport control, bypassing the need for traditional checkpoints.
Initially, the service will be available for business and first-class passengers, with plans to expand it to all travellers across both arrival and departure terminals at DXB and DWC. The project, in collaboration with airlines and other stakeholders, is expected to be rolled out "soon," according to Lt Col Al Falasi.
A New Era Beyond Smart Gates
Currently, Dubai airports are equipped with smart gates that still require passengers to pause for biometric scans. However, this new system will mark a significant shift in the travel process by removing any need for stopping. "We have moved on from the gate phase," Lt Col Al Falasi remarked. "Our aim is to make the travel experience completely seamless."
He further explained that GDRFA has access to comprehensive data for both citizens and residents, which will be integrated into the system. The goal is for passengers to feel as though there is no border control at all. From the moment they get off the plane to collecting their luggage and leaving the airport, biometric data will be gathered and processed in real-time without requiring any active interaction from the traveller.
Pre-Registration for First-Time Travellers
For those visiting Dubai airports for the first time, a pre-registration process will be required. Travellers will need to register through an app before their arrival, allowing their biometric data to be matched upon entry. Once registered, they will be able to use the Travel Without Borders system for future visits without additional steps.
This forward-thinking initiative reinforces Dubai’s position as a global leader in smart travel solutions, aiming to set new standards for efficiency and convenience in air travel.
