Dubai’s Former Zoo Site to Become a Green Residential Landmark
The iconic site of the old Dubai Zoo in Jumeirah is undergoing a transformation into a new low-rise, sustainable residential destination. Designed to honour the heritage of one of Dubai’s oldest public attractions, the redevelopment will blend urban living with nature and community-first design.
The Dubai Zoo officially closed in 2017, with its animals relocated to Dubai Safari Park. Originally built in 1967, the zoo was home to more than 100 species and was a cultural and historic touchpoint for generations of residents.
Nature-Inspired Living Where the Zoo Once Stood
The new project, led by investment firm Shamal, will be known as an "Urban Oasis" — a walkable, community-focused development featuring lush landscaping and architectural nods to the zoo’s natural setting.
Plans include 90 thoughtfully designed residential units set within tree-lined courtyards and open communal areas. The design will prioritise greenery, privacy, and wellness, with key features such as a large central park, preserved mature trees, and organic landscaping that pays homage to the zoo’s original layout.
A Vision of Mindful, Sustainable Living
According to Abdulla Binhabtoor, CEO of Shamal, this is more than a real estate development — it’s a reimagining of a deeply cherished space. “This is a profound reimagining of a beloved landmark that holds deep connections for countless individuals and the wider community,” he said.
“At Shamal, we aspire to deliver the extraordinary — not through scale alone, but through intention, care, and design that speaks to the soul of the city. Our vision is to respectfully honour the site’s rich past and curate a progressive space for modern living.”
Architecture That Reflects Legacy and Innovation
Shamal has partnered with renowned design firm DXB Lab, led by Khalid Al Najjar, to bring the vision to life. Al Najjar explained that the design process began by studying the site's historical and natural character.
“Our approach was inspired by the organic clusters and greenery that once defined the Dubai Zoo,” he said. “We’ve translated those elements into a modern geometric architectural language that feels both rooted and forward-looking.”
The homes will seamlessly blend into the existing Jumeirah neighborhood, creating a natural transition between old and new. Architectural harmony, sustainable materials, and a community-led layout define the project’s guiding principles.
Amenity-Rich Lifestyle in the Heart of Jumeirah
Future residents can expect a curated lifestyle, complete with courtyards, wellness zones, a family pool, gym, children’s play areas, and a clubhouse for social and community events. The project is designed to promote connection, relaxation, and sustainable urban living.
With a deep respect for its past and a clear vision for modern living, the transformation of the Dubai Zoo site into a living, breathing urban oasis marks a new chapter for Jumeirah — where memory and modernity coexist beautifully.
